Vehicle owners and fleet operators may inherit dealer-installed alarms, trackers, or immobilizers without clear disclosure or documentation. These devices can remain connected to the vehicle network, creating privacy, security, reliability, warranty, and resale concerns, while ordinary repair shops may lack a repeatable process for identifying and removing them safely.
Offer a mobile inspection that inventories aftermarket modules, traces their wiring and network connections, assesses removal risk, and produces a photographic report. A trained automotive electrical technician can then remove or isolate approved devices, restore factory wiring, clear resulting faults, and verify that safety-critical systems operate normally.

That was the main point of the UCSD study: the device is embedded deeply into the CAN bus of the car, it’s difficult to take it out, so the dealer simply leaves it in place, and the customer isn’t aware that it’s still installed and poses an active security threat. For what it’s worth, when I contacted the company, they offered to send a technician out to remove device from my car at no charge. I’m taking them up on the offer.
I couldn't disagree more. Treating this as a low-priority nuisance is a massive business failure. Really? A massive failure? Yes. You are completely ignoring the broader threat landscape and the commercial realities of selling connected devices. But the car drives perfectly fine. Nobody is getting hurt. The brakes work. The steering works. A compromised in-vehicle compute ad-app form forces the OEM to deal with massive privacy violations. You have a customer's car acting as a proxy botnet, routing who knows what kind of illegal traffic through their cellular connection. I mean, true. That's not great. It's terrible. That is a massive supplier assurance failure and an absolute legal nightmare waiting to happen.
And if we take that lesson and connect it to the bigger picture of where transportation is headed, it leaves us with a deeply critical question to consider as the automotive industry rapidly evolves. What's that? If an aftermarket dealer-installed alarm system, a relatively simple device designed just to flash lights and block an engine crank can cause this much operational pressure and supply chain chaos today, what happens tomorrow? That's a scary thought. What happens when third-party dealer-installed accessories start demanding to tap into driver assistance modules, LIDAR sensors, or semi-autonomous steering systems? The attack surface just explodes.
Which is what you want. Absolutely. Okay. Let's unpack this. If the OEM builds this incredibly robust walled garden, how does a dealer installed alarm system just casually bypass all those privilege boundaries? That's a fair question. I mean, you are telling me a third-party module from a retail vendor is just physically spliced into the vehicle's nervous system and it is suddenly completely trusted by the engine and the rest of the car?
