The Problem

Therapy clients often feel stuck but cannot distinguish between normal discomfort, an unsuitable treatment style, and a poor therapist match. They also struggle to request more structure, prompting, challenge, or skills-based work without damaging the therapeutic relationship. This uncertainty can prolong ineffective care or cause clients to quit therapy prematurely.

Potential Solution

Offer a structured, nonclinical review that documents the client's goals, preferred level of direction, current session experience, and unmet needs. The client receives a concise discussion plan for the next session, fit criteria, and—when appropriate—a shortlist of relevant treatment styles or providers. The service does not diagnose, provide therapy, or judge clinical quality.

Why Now?

Growing use of therapy has created more variation in client expectations and treatment approaches. Clients increasingly need independent navigation between general supportive therapy, structured skills work, and specialized care.

How to tell if therapist can help you?
r/therapySep 2, 2026

The thing is, I am assuming what your therapist is doing is probably what most people *want* and *need* from therapy (i.e. validation, reflection, active listening, to feel heard and encouraged, etc). It sounds like you want more skill based stuff, and cluster b is not super common so msot therapists are going to appeal to most people with their approach,..so look into DBT therapy groups or skills groups or just tell your therapist exactly what you just said here (with edits of course) and find a therapist that does the therapy you are looking for and dont stress about it.

MOR. Therapists are supposed to challenge you. If this annoys you or upsets you, take it to the next session and discuss that with her. That’s what therapy is for.

Have you discussed that with your therapist? Like told them specifically what you’re looking for from therapy?
