The Problem

People who want to track calories and macros often quit because manual food logging is slow, repetitive, and spread across separate apps or spreadsheets. Existing calorie apps add friction through signup walls, item-by-item search, subscriptions, and privacy concerns around sensitive eating and weight data. Users still want the benefit of tracking, but not the daily burden of typing, searching, photographing perfectly, or surrendering personal data.

Potential Solution

Build a mobile-first meal logger that opens directly to capture: speak a meal, type natural language, scan a plate, or scan a nutrition label. The app estimates calories and macros, breaks full meals or full-day descriptions into confirmable entries, and stores the food diary locally by default with optional private sync. The first product surface is a simple capture-confirm-history loop with daily targets, meal calendar, and Apple Health or Health Connect activity adjustment.

Why Now?

Consumer AI models now make natural-language and image-based food estimation cheap enough for solo developers to ship. Privacy concerns and subscription fatigue create room for a local-first, no-account alternative to incumbent calorie trackers.

Review of Calorie Counter by fatsecret Great app, but as a person who works with a nutritionist to improve their diet, it is vital I write down what time I eat my meal and how I feel after it. Currently I do this on a separate dedicated notebook for this which is really annoying. This app would be 4 stars if I could select the time I ate the meal, and could write down manually or record a short voice note for how I felt after the meal.

Review of MyFitnessPal: Calorie Counter Update: The new layout is horrible. I loved the simple, compact overview we had before. Now the items are so big, you can't even see one full meal on the whole screen. The macros are also difficult to read with the font size and colour. Old Review: I really like the free version. Easy to add recipes or meals, so you don't have to put in everything manually. If you have an account and login after reinstalling, all your recipes stay saved as well. 👌🏼

Review of Simple・AI Weight Loss & Health The food logging is extremely inaccurate even if you scan the food entry or submit it manually. The terrible thing is I already paid for it, so I'm stuck.

Typical Daily User
Calo: AI Food Calorie Counter · Apple App StoreAug 31, 2026

Review of Calo: AI Food Calorie Counter Typical Daily User Program doesn’t seem to keep relative similar and consistent entries from prior entries readily collated for easier search. Program does NOT recognize in search data base typical routine national products data base or continues to offer locations restaurants and chain info not available in our area and not chosen for prior meals. Fitness Pal has way better database, but doesn’t have the cool easy scan feature which is great.
